What Frans de Waal Saw – A Found Poem

Male chimps fighting
sulking in separate branches.
one held out his hand,
they embraced and kissed.

Essential to survive.

Savagery: no part in leadership.
Instead: deals, alliances.

Beyond co-operation, altruism:
matriarch chimp too old to walk
helped into a tree by other females;
group of males licking wounds
of defeated warrior;
males providing child care;
no intolerance.

When covid-19 lockdowns ended:
human beings delighting
in simple group togetherness,
looking at real faces,
touching each other,
in their primate nature.
