Old Growth

Look where it’s steep. Or swampy.
Look in every gorge
that feeds a great lake.

An old tree trunk might have
or a twisted gnarled crown.

You might look for
cavities or
swellings, old scars

on bark deeply furrowed
or worn
to a startling smoothness.

Through the crises
and risks:
resilience, tight relationships.

You’ll find ginseng,
grape fern, moonwort
on the understory floor.
